Success Stories
- Four Union City High School students
each captured a Gold Medal at the Hudson County Science Fair. A huge
congratulations to all the students and to the teachers who coached
them, Dr. Mina Armani, Dr. Judy Barrios, Mrs. Luisa Marcos, and Mrs.
Nadia Makar.
- We are pleased to announce that 2 Union City High School students have
won first and third place respectively in the José Martí Essay Contest
sponsored by the Cuban Lions Club of Hudson County - WNY Chapter. A
junior, in Mr. Rafael Martel's Spanish Native Language Level 3 class was
awarded First Place $500. A Sophomore, in Ms. Ingrid Lugo's Spanish
Native Language Level 2 class was awarded Third Place $200. Only two
high schools received this honor, Union City HS and Memorial HS taking
the Second Place award. Our sincere congratulations go out to both our
students, their families, and teachers for a job well done.
- On Saturday, February 5th, fifteen Union City Summer Scholar students
participated in the 14th Annual Research Poster Competition sponsored by
the New York section of the American Chemical Society that took place
at St. Joseph College in Brooklyn. Ten awards were given including two
First Place awards of $75 each, two Second Place awards of $50 each, and
six Honorable Mentions. Congratulations to all.
- It is with great pride that we congratulate a Student - Athlete at UCHS
for accepting a full football scholarship to Florida State University.
He had many scholarship offers and ultimately decided to play at FSU. He
is the first Division 1 Scholarship Athlete in the short history of
UCHS and we hope that there are many more in the future. We also
congratulate and thank Coach Valdez for all of his support and hard work
during this long process.
- We are very pleased to announce that Union City students had a great showing at the Science League Competition:
- Both UCHS and AEA teams tied for 1st Place in the county in Chemistry II.
- Chemistry I team tied for 1st Place with Bayonne High School.
- Biology II team captured 2nd Place in the county.
- Biology I team received 3rd Place.

- Congratulations to Amanda Smith, Biology teacher at the UCHS/AEA, for
having been selected to present at the Partners in Science Conference in
California. Ms. Smith developed an improved method for analyzing a new
lamprey pheromone using gas chromotography-mass spectrometry. We all
wish her continued success, we are very proud of her achievement.
- Christmas came early this year, three of our Union City High School
students have been accepted on early decision to MIT, Brown University,
and Yale University. All 3 students conducted research at Princeton
University last summer. Congratulations to all three students for their
great achievements. Their hard work truly paid off.
- Congratulations to two Union City High School students for being
finalists in the Tri-States Olympians Achievement Award. They are among
six high school students who were honored for their academic
achievements and their involvement in their community. The students
from New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut who have accomplished a high
degree of success in academia, sports, and volunteerism.
Congratulations to all of the winners for making the world a better
place for all of us.
